Sugar millers are lobbying for the establishment of a special tribunal to address the numerous court battles between the sugar companies and farmers.

Through the proposed Sugar Industry Appeals Tribunal, they have expressed confidence that disagreements arising in the sector will expeditiously be dealt with by persons with expert knowledge on matters likely to come before them.

Sony Sugar Company acting Managing Director Bernard Otieno said lack of regulations in the sector has caused the company, among others, to experience huge losses due to unfair practices by some of the industry players.

“The government should as a matter of urgency set up the model to reverse the current trend where a section of industry players are not playing by the rules,” he said.

Mr Otieno said stakeholders are closely working with the office of the Chief Justice to come up with a court which is mandated to ensure reasonable and equitable access to justice in appreciation of the workings of the sugar industry.
