Transporters protest Sh500 annual fee for e-cargo monitoring

The Kenya Transporters Association (KTA) and Kenya International Freight and Warehousing Association (Kifwa) want the fee scrapped.
Transports service providers have locked horns with electronic cargo tracking device vendors over a Sh500 annual processing and vetting fees introduced recently.
Transporters have to pay the fees to the Electronic Cargo Tracking System Providers Association of Kenya to obtain certificates that enable goods on transit to pass through Customs checkpoints.
The Kenya Transporters Association (KTA) and Kenya International Freight and Warehousing Association (Kifwa) want the fee scrapped.
“They say the charge is for facilitating their operations and for you to get your transit goods certificate from Kenya Revenue Authority, then you must have an electronic cargo tracking system certificate from your vendor,” said KTA chief executive Mercy Ireri.
The lobby group wants gadget vendors to take care of their costs “and they should respect the contracts they have signed with their clients”.
Kifwa Mombasa branch chairman Roy Mwanthi said each transporter pays Sh4,750 per truck a month to the vendors for the tracking of cargo on transit.
