Nairobi MCAs on Thursday voted to impeach County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi over abuse of office, interfering with county procurement and misuse of public funds.
More than 80 per cent of the ward representatives, 103, voted in support of the impeachment motion tabled by Waithaka MCA Antony Kiragu. Two MCAs opposed the motion while two others abstained from the vote.
The law requires that an impeachment be supported by at least 75 per cent of MCAs. Ms Elachi is accused of intimidating procurement officers to award a tender to buy the Speaker’s residence to a bidder who had quoted Sh125 million, yet City Hall had capped the price at Sh100 million.
Mr Kiragu alleged that the Speaker spend Sh1.5 million, public funds, on travel to the US for plastic and knee surgery as evidenced by claims from CIC Insurance.
