Tea earnings in the first-half of the year registered a growth of Sh2 billion compared with the same period in 2017, helped by high volumes of sale.

However, the volumes sold this year were higher pushing up the value of the beverage.
According to the directorate, 152 million kilos traded in the period compared 132 million kilos sold at the auction in the first half of last year.
“Cumulative average price for first six months of 2018 was lower at $2.76 (Sh276) per Kg compared with $3.00 (Sh300) for the corresponding period of 2017,” said the report.

In June, 28 million kilos were sold through the auction against 23 million recorded in the same month last year.
Prices at the auction have been dismal in the last six months in the wake of high volumes. The prices touched a low of Sh230 in last week’s auction.
