High-end homeowners now control 80 per cent of swimming pool heating pumps in Nairobi, signalling a change in lifestyle.
Statistics by water solutions company Davis & Shirtliff indicate that Karen, Lavington, Westlands and Muthaiga homeowners have installed pumps in their swimming pools as opposed to the past when most affluent families preferred swimming in hotel pools.
The firm’s business development director, Edward Davis, said real estate developers have also adopted heated swimming pools as a must-have in new properties to lure clients.
Buyers are spoilt for choice as the high-end residential property market continues to attract local and foreign investments.
‘’Swimming pools are now a must-have for new properties in urban areas as prospective buyers or tenants are selective on the add-ons. With Nairobi being located in a high-altitude area, a heated pool is more attractive than the traditional cold pool. Kenyans also want to swim at any time, whether during the day, in the evening or late into the night after work,” he said.

Swimming pool water reservoirs are connected to the solar heating panels thereby ensuring a healthy water circulation from pools and back to the reservoirs.
The trend has also attracted hotels and learning institutions keen on fending off competition as heated pools become a new marketing strategy. Building a pool costs about Sh1.5 million.
