Construction of 10,000 houses for civil servants in Nairobi and Mombasa gained momentum last week with the government inviting transaction advisors to oversee the projects in the next 15 years.

An advertisement posted in the dailies by State Department of Housing and Urban Development invited bids for the projects planned for execution in Shauri Moyo, Park Road, Starehe and a mixed use development project at Muguga Green in Westland’s, Nairobi as well as at Mombasa’s Hobley.

The winning firms will have 15-year contracts and ensure all projects are viable in terms of quality, affordability to the funding agency (government) and the targeted civil servants.

“They must be commercially viable, acceptable to the stakeholders as well as manageable to both the contracting authority (government) and the private party (contractor),” it said.

The advisors will oversee preparation of bidding documents, selection of private building contractors, formulate designs as well as a funding model for individual projects in collaboration with the government during implementation.

The projects include Park Road Housing Project where 1,600 housing units are planned comprising one, two and three bedroom houses, Shauri Moyo (1,800 units), Starehe (5,000 units) with Muguga Greens and Mombasa’s Hobley estate taking up 750 units each.

The ambitious projects will be implemented by the Civil Servants Housing Scheme Fund.
