A monthly Sugar Directorate report indicates the quantities produced between January and October increased to 411,567 from 284,036 in the corresponding period last year.
Decline in production last year saw consumers pay exorbitant price between January and May, with a kilo of the commodity hiting Sh250 on average from a low of Sh200.

A monthly Sugar Directorate report indicates the quantities produced between January and October increased to 411,567 from 284,036 in the corresponding period last year.
“Sugar production in January-October 2018 was 411,567 tonnes compared to 284,036 tonnes attained in the same period last year, an impressive increase of 45 percent,” says the directorate in the report.
“This is a good indicator that the industry is recovering from the drought suffered by the country the previous year, which had led to dwindled sugar production.”

The prices have, however, cooled off after the factory price of sugar dropped as high volumes of imports helped increase supply in the market.
