Clinical officers working in public health facilities have threatened to go on strike if Salaries Remuneration Commission (SRC) fails to release the job evaluation results for the practitioners.

The Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) also demanded county governments, including Meru, Kiambu, Nyandarua and Siaya, that have not fully paid July and August salaries to do so before September 14.

The lobby, whose 6,000 out of the 20,000 members work for the government, also asked the Ministry of Health to initiate payment of diploma clinical officer interns as provided by the internship policy with immediate effect.

“We wish to remind the SRC, Ministry of Health and Council of Governors (CoG) that the agreed upon timeline for rolling out re-evaluation results after our appeal for clinical officers has elapsed and our suspended strike comes into effect on September 15,” said KUCO Secretary General, George Gibore.

KUCO also asked the ministry and CoG to form Kenya Health Human Resource Advisory Council as provided in the Health Act to solve the issues facing workers in the sector and find lasting solution to the perennial strikes.

“Today nurses are eight days shy of the 100 days striking period like it was the case with the doctors. This pattern is unacceptable and the strike has put our clinical officers who have been at work under a lot of pressure due to added work load. It is of utmost importance that the MoH, CoG and SRC find a lasting solution to this perennial problem,” said KUCO Chariman, Peterson Wachira.
