KCB branch loses Sh50 million in daring heist

Police in Thika are investigating a bank robbery that happened on Sunday night at the KCB #ticker:KCB Thika branch that led to the loss of approximately Sh50 million.

According to authorities, the robbers accessed the lender's vault strong room through a huge underground tunnel and stole the money stored in two safes.

"They are believed to have used oxy-acetylene flame to drill holes into the safes," said the police.

Arrests made

Kiambu county commander Mr Adiel Nyange said Monday afternoon that three people have been arrested in connection with the daring heist.

The KCB Thika branch manager is said to have realized that the bank had been robbed at around 8 a.m. Monday morning when he opened the strong room only to find that it had been broken into earlier and cash stolen.

"The robbers must have had an informer working at the bank who guided them into where the safes are kept..." confirmed Thika Deputy police commander Mr Bernard Ayoo earlier on Monday.

The tunnel is said to have been dug through a bookshop that is located opposite the building that houses the KCB branch.

The shop's owners had been operating the business for 3 months.

'No cause for alarm'

The tier 1 lender confirmed the discovery of a break-in at the branch this morning but assured its customers that their funds were safe.

"There is no cause for alarm...The relevant authorities have been informed and investigations are ongoing," KCB said in a statement today.
