Two years ago, the county administration and the church formed a committee to resolve the impasse but their efforts failed.
A fresh dispute has erupted between the Migori county government and the Catholic church over ownership of land.
The church claims to have lost Sh25 million since 2014 when the dispute began, resulting from non-occupancy of the hostels built on the land at Kitere, Rongo sub-county.
The hostels were targeting students from the adjacent Rongo University College.
The county administration claims the ownership of the land, accusing the church of acquiring it illegally. The matter is pending in court.
On Monday, Migori governor Okoth Obado dismissed claims that some officials of the county had distributed leaflets to the church faithful on the ownership of the property.
He termed the leaflets as “materials calculated to taint his image ahead of the August 8 polls so as to lose his seat”.
“The timing of the leaflets is telling…they are trying to lure their members to back my opponent because the land issue has been slotted as part of their sermons in the parishes in the coming Sundays,” said the county chief.
The governor said the dispute should be addressed through the legal mechanisms.
A church official who asked not to be named because he is not authorised to talk to the media on behalf of the Catholic community said the “land row is very dear to us and that is why we are engaging our members before they vote”.
Mr Obado who is defending his seat on the ODM ticket, is facing former Cabinet minister Ochillo Ayacko, who is an Independent candidate.
