Use of vehicles in Lamu Old Town rises despite ban

Use of vehicles in Lamu Old Town is on the rise despite a ban by the county government.

The county barred the use of cars, motorcycles and bicycles in August 2015 to preserve the Lamu Old Town’s unique age-old culture and heritage, which is said to be on the verge of extinction due to “excessive westernisation”.

Previously, there were about 20 cars, 30 motorcycles and more than 100 bicycles on the tiny island but the numbers reduced after the ban.

The only vehicles allowed to operate in the town are the Lamu hospital ambulance, a fire engine and county garbage collection tractor.

Others allowed in the town include the county commissioner’s official vehicle and motorcycles belonging to the water board, Kenya Power and the county.
