Kenya’s mineral exports are facing a mixed bag of fortunes with soda ash, the leading commodity, recording improved demand as economies in Asia show signs of recovery.

In February, Magadi Soda was forced to shut down its new $97 million (about Sh7.7 billion) plant for two weeks to cut down on rising costs and storage problems due to slow moving goods. The situation, however, seems to have changed with official statistics indicating that soda ash production went up in April.
