Debt service beats recurrent, growth spending for two years in a row

Kenya’s debt service costs overtook both recurrent and development spending for two consecutive years following heavy debts maturing revealing the heavy burden debt expenditure has imposed on taxpayers.

An analysis of data from the Treasury indicates that in the nine months between July 2024 and March 2025, the government spent Sh1.196 trillion in debt service compared to Sh1.16 trillion used on recurrent and executing development projects.
