Expenditure on footwear imports is growing by double-digit rates, new data shows, signifying bigger shipment volumes and casting doubt on President William Ruto’s pledge to discourage the importation of the products by building the capacity of local producers.

Data by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows that the value of footwear imported into the country rose 15.11 percent to Sh1.85 billion in the first quarter of the year, ending a streak of consecutive falls in the review period of the prior three years.
