Taxpayer pain as MPs seek Sh364bn budget top-up
Alego Usonga MP and Chairperson of National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee Samuel Atandi during a press conference in his office at Kenyatta International Convention Centre Nairobi on May 20, 2025.
Taxpayers face an extra burden of Sh363.9billion in the current 2025/2026 budget cycle to June after Parliament approved a proposal for additional funding to cover shortfalls in the emoluments for civil servants.
The proposal by the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee (BAC) will see the over-all size of the 2025/26 budget jump to Sh4.66 trillion, which is 8.6 percent higher than the budget approved in June last year.
