President Uhuru Kenyatta Tuesday ordered the newly appointed National Youth Service (NYS) director general, Richard Ndubai, to revive youth programmes in his capacity.

Speaking during Mr Ndubai's swearing-in ceremony at State House, Mombasa, Mr Kenyatta said that the objective of NYS since its formation has been to empower the youth and enable them to be a part of nation building.

Stating that he intended to breathe new life into the NYS programmes in the next two months, the Head of State said he expected Mr Ndubai’s first key objective would be to look into the organisation's structure with a view of eliminating all those who have been part of the problem, as opposed to joining government to be part of the solution.

“And today 50 years after independence, as we swear you in as the new director general, I want to clearly state my own personal commitment to this particular agenda that the core mandate of NYS is to empower our young people – a responsibility bestowed upon you,” said Mr Kenyatta.

He noted with regret that even after NYS was re-launched with gusto and a lot of expectations from young people, the Service had been short-changed by certain individuals, resulting in the recent resignation of Nelson Githinji as director general.

Mr Githinji gave up his position at NYS after the Director of Public Prosecutions, Keriako Tobiko, ordered that he be prosecuted alongside others over a Sh695 million scandal.

He has also been accused of servicing and maintaining his privately owned vehicle at the expense of the NYS.

The new director general holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Harvard University, a Bachelor of Commerce - accounting option - from the University of Nairobi and has been a long-serving public servant who once served as a Permanent Secretary.

He is due to graduate with a PHD in Performance Contracting, Measurement and Public Service Delivery from the same university.
