David Livingstone, I presume?” asked Henry Morton Stanley as he shook Livingstone’s hand on November 10, 1871, upon finding him at Ujiji, on Lake Tanganyika.

Stanley was born John Rowlands on January 28, 1841 in Wales to John Rowlands and Elizabeth Parry. He was brought up by reluctant relatives and spent some time at St Asaph Workhouse, an institution for the poor, where he received a reasonable education up to age 15.
