Consumers have expressed jitters over possible hikes in sugar prices during the current quarter ending next month, on the back of multi-pronged uncertainties arising from unstable factories and a shortage of cane delivered to millers in recent months.
A new survey by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) survey shows that while the long March-May rains boosted the supply of staple foods such as maize, beans and vegetables, sugar defied the trend due to a combination of factory shutdowns for maintenance and uncertainties tied to the privatisation of key mills, as well as falling volumes of cane deliveries.
