The phrase “brevity is the soul of wit” comes from William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. It is spoken by the character Polonius, a verbose and pompous courtier.

The meaning of the phrase suggests that the essence of wit, intelligent humour or cleverness, lies in being concise. In other words, expressing thoughts clearly and succinctly often demonstrates greater intelligence and creativity than long-winded explanations.
