Since President William Ruto lifted the 10-year ban on the importation of products of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in 2022, there has been a robust public discourse and a flurry of court cases that have gone as far as the Court of Appeal and East African Court of Justice.

The government believes the country should embrace GMOs as they are safe and there is a mechanism in place to manage them as set out in the Biosafety Act of 2009.
