Safaricom #ticker:SCOM has connected over 81,000 homes with fibre Internet countrywide as the telco expands its presence beyond mobile telephony services.
The home fibre Internet network currently covers 19 neighbourhoods within Nairobi including South B, Pangani, Ngong and Rongai in Kajiado County.
It is also available in Mombasa’s Nyali and Bamburi neighbourhoods, parts of Kisumu, Eldoret and Thika towns.
“We have passed more than 81,000 homes across the country and continue to invest to reach and connect more customers in line with growing demand for high-speed data connectivity,” said Safaricom’s CEO Bob Collymore.
The growing number of subscription on-demand services like Iflix and Netflix allowing people to stream live programmes in Kenya and more people opting to work from home have led to the increased demand for Internet in residential buildings.
“Our customer needs are changing – they are demanding more from their Internet connectivity and we are seeing the emergence of a more digitally enhanced lifestyle,” said Mr Collymore.
“Consumers are using more data.”
