Nation Media picks new chief executive

Nation Media Group (NMG) #ticker:NMG has appointed Stephen Waithaka Gitagama as the new group chief executive officer. The appointment takes effect Thursday, June 7.

Mr Gitagama who has been the acting chief executive since February 1 replaces Joe Muganda, who had served as CEO of the regional media house from July 2015.

“The Board of Nation Media Group PLC, is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Stephen Waithaka Gitagama as the Group chief executive officer of the company, with effect from 7th June 2018,” NMG said in a notice signed by Group Company Secretary James Kinyua.

The new CEO joined NMG in September 2007 as the group finance director from Kenya Breweries where he held a similar position. 

A Certified Public Accountant of Kenya, Mr Gitagama also holds a Masters of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) from the University of Nairobi.

He serves as a director of Monitor Publications Limited in Uganda and Mwananchi Communications Limited in Tanzania, NMG’s subsidiary companies. He is also a director of PDM (Holdings) Limited.

The new CEO is expected to steer the group through its ongoing shift to digital media platforms. 

Under his watch, the company has announced a Sh150 million investment in a new digital publishing platform to be commissioned in the next six months.

Called Newscycle Solution, the system is the most popular digital platform globally, used by more than 750 media houses across the globe. It will replace the one the company has been using since 2006.
