Homes and businesses face fines if found to be illegally dumping excess electricity from their solar plants to the national grid. The fines are part of changes to the law that were gazetted on September 18, 2026.
Introduction of the fines is meant to deter prosumers (Kenya Power customers with back-up power plants) from infiltrating Kenya’s electricity distribution network, which is constrained and highly vulnerable to shocks.
