Investor boost as Kenya now begins regulating commercial data centres
Kenya has only two AI-capable data centres against South Africa’s five and Nigeria’s one, according to Data Centre Map, a global data centre directory.
Commercial data centres are now formally regulated by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) as the country races to adopt evolving technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) in key sectors of its economy.
Revised regulations by the CA have placed commercial data centres under the telecommunications licensing regime—marking a shift from previous rules published in 2021, which did not expressly recognise the facilities.
