The long-awaited increase in food production to bridge the perpetual deficit may take longer to be realised after the National Irrigation Board cancelled invitations to private investors to put in bids for the Galana Kulalu project.

The NIB had initially invited investors to start production on the 10,000-acre model farm whose infrastructure it has been building since 2015.

The international tender had been initially issued early this month. “The procuring entity National Irrigation Board has terminated the procurement proceedings for the tender.

The termination of the procurement proceeding has been caused by operation of law/policy direction,” said the notice to those who had put in tenders.

When the Business Daily called the NIB on Wednesday for clarification on the operation of the new policy, the chief executive was said to be in a board meeting while other executives declined to comment. At the same time, several politicians from Kilifi County were reported to be opposed to the privatisation of the project.
