The government has waived the Sh150 fees for acquiring birth certificates to ensure that all schoolchildren have the document.

In a circular dated July 4 and addressed to Education regional coordinators and county directors, PS Bellio Kipsang said learners from the nursery to secondary schools would benefit from the waiver between June 6 to October 6.

Dr Kipsang said the Ministry of Education had successfully sought the waiver from Interior secretary Joseph Nkaissery.

“Urgently bring this information to the attention of boards of management, school head teachers, parents and guardians so as to take advantage of this window,” said the PS in the circular.

In 2010, Kenya National Examinations Council made it compulsory for candidates sitting for national examinations to have birth certificates for identification. The National Hospital Insurance Fund has also made it a requirement for its members’ children seeking treatment.
