Hotels miss ugali as flour shortage bites harder

Some eateries in Nyandarua have been without ugali following an acute shortage of maize flour.

The stocks began vanishing from shelves on Monday and by Thursday, most shelves in supermarkets and other retail outlets were dry.

Hotels and butcheries went without ugali, a staple food to thousands of customers.

Few eateries with flour reduced by half the slice of ugali that goes Sh50.

Traders with limited supplies forced customers to buy slow moving items as a condition to get the flour. Such items included packets of tea leaves or some dusty jelly nearing expiry dates.

In hotels and butcheries, a slice of ugali that normally sells at Sh50 was reduced by nearly a half its normal size.

Few outlets with limited stocks of the flour increased the prices by between Sh30 and Sh45.  

“Just yesterday, I bought a 2kg Pembe maize flour at Sh130, today I bought the same packet at Sh165,” said Njeri Waiganjo.

In the same outlet, a 2kg Snowline Afya Ugali retailed at Sh180 on Monday but was yesterday selling at Sh225. This was the only brand left on the shelves.
